This project is part of my integrative, technical research that focuses on the human perception and self-awareness of the man-machine relationship of computing interface, mechanical, and emotional phenomenon. More precisely, the hidden relationship that subconsciously embeds in daily life.
For example, the virtual assistant is going viral since the first commercial came to market which is Siri in 2011. From time to time, we say Hey Siri! and Ok Google to control the music and calling our friends while our hands are busy or just be fashion to control something by voice. Reflecting on my own experience, 5 years ago I was working in an architecture firm. Sometimes, I drive my car to visit some construction site outside the city. The long driving hours always makes me bored and tired. The google voice assistant is the only human-liked voice that speaks to me. Every time it (he/she) speaks to me I feel more energetic. It is like you have a company in your tiring long drive. Sometimes I imaged the voice is an actual human, so I started to chat with it. Of course, the google maps assistant is for navigation. It can not process the irreverent command, so the conversation became funky: an emotional human talking daily shit to the very command-oriented machine. However, I found this experience very inspiring. Recently, it is easier to talk deeper to the virtual assistant our interaction with the machine increase subconsciously. They were designed to process more in-depth information and have an upgraded AI engine to interact with users.
Sometimes, it is enjoyable to talk to a machine but I feel lost in this interaction. I wonder what is the reality it(he/she) in the time we are talking? How interesting could happen when we chat with a virtual assistant? Will I consider it(he/she) as my friend?
In order to understand this, I want to understand where I am in the relationship between digital and reality. During the time I was alone, I started to talk to Siri on my phone. To express my feelings, to have a shit talk, to understand Siri deeper: the most intimate machine in my daily life.
In the bigger scope, I study various human-machine relationships. A machine with human emotions, a machine with human activities, a machine as our companion, a machine as an interlocutor, and scope for creating a new sense of vision and hearing. I also use mobile phones and video calls as a medium to explore the timeline that blends time and space under the technology of telepresence. This work aims to explore a methodology that integrates with AI machine, and audience. Most importantly, it will address the paradox, intimacy, and conflicts in the contemporary relationship in man-machine communication.
